Among the various things to consider when looking for a new car to purchase, fuel economy is especially important. Choosing a more fuel-efficient model can have a big impact on operating costs down the road. And, when gas prices increase, you’ll be thankful you bought a fuel-efficient car. Here are our top picks for fuel-efficient sedans for the year.
Lexus ES Hybrid
This model is a well-rounded option. It has a rather handsome and well-appointed cabin, offers ample room, makes for a cushioned and serene ride, and has good fuel economy estimates that come up to 44 mpg. Its main drawback is an infotainment system that can be a little frustrating to use. The less-than-sporty driving dynamics is also not something we’re too keen about.
Kia Optima Hybrid
The Optima Hybrid offers a spacious and upscale cabin, generous trunk space, and a number of standard features. Put simply, this one is a solid family sedan that offers more perks than just good fuel economy. The hybrid powertrain of the car combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined 192hp. The Optima is also available in a plug-in hybrid version, which can travel around 28 miles just on electric power.
Ford Fusion Hybrid
A lot sportier than many of its rivals, the Ford Fusion Hybrid comes with an upscale interior, a user-friendly infotainment system, and a good serving of standard features. The electric motor and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produce a combined 188hp. That said, the Fusion can feel slightly sluggish on highways. The overall fuel economy of 42 mpg is also not equal to what’s offered by some of its rivals. That said, the Fusion Hybrid is a good choice and can make commutes more entertaining.
Honda Accord Hybrid
With a spacious and upscale interior, and a powertrain that gives you decent performance with excellent fuel economy, the Accord Hybrid is one of the highest-ranked models in its class. It’s a great family sedan, thanks to its intuitive infotainment system, ample tech and safety features, and sufficient trunk room that’s perfect for hauling groceries or packing cargo in. The power comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with two batteries. Overall, the Honda Accord Hybrid offers fuel efficiency of 48 mpg.
